He explains the nature of the relationship and recounts improvements brought to the country by the United States. These include a lowered infant mortality rate, a public school system, and a community college. He is proud of Micronesia's advancements towards self-government. However, infrastructure destroyed in World War II has yet to be replaced, and rampant inflation plagues the islands. In closing, Johnston lays out future possibilities for Micronesia as a self-governing nation.
