Date Created September 15, 1978 Description Capitalism is in serious trouble. In the last twenty years, our capitalistic system has been increasingly burdened by a widening web of government interference. Ever growing regulation at all levels threatens our market economy. We need a "revolution on regulation." The key to that revolution is the public. In 1977 U.S. citizens paid more than $100 billion for government regulation. Butcher discusses the impact of this on businesses, income, and jobs. The real victims of excessive regulation are the poor, but the greatest cost of regulation is personal freedom. Butcher suggests introducing economic impact statements, requiring Congress to set regulatory objectives, and calling for government adoption of a goals-oriented approach to regulation.
