Lenczowski looks at the underlying concerns that lead to the Six-Day War in the Middle East. He believes there is a clash of mutually exclusive nationalism between the Arabs and Israelis, with no compromise possible. He argues the Arabs see Israel is a prime example of imperialism in an anti-imperialism age; the Arab philosophy of liberation is balanced against the Israeli doctrine of massive retaliation. He believes Arab countries are divided between conservative monarchies and revolutionary governments under military leadership. Meanwhile, Soviet influence is present, though in the background. He argues Israeli military superiority stems from its increased average skill sets and intellects of its populace. In the coming months, negotiations for Mideast peace will require true statesmanship.
