Speaker Strong, Edward W. (Edward William) (1901-)
Date CreatedSeptember 10, 1965
Description

Former Chancellor Strong states the University of California, Berkeley, like all public educational institutions, must remain free from political and sectarian domination. He says the Free Speech Movement's political demands created conflict with university policies over whether students would be allowed to use the university for non-university political, religious or social causes. He argues the university should honor and respect the students' rights as citizens to engage in political activities off campus, but should not provide the means for the students to do so on campus. He says free speech was not the issue of the controversy.
