Speaker Neilan, Edwin
Date CreatedJuly 01, 1964
Description

Neilan speaks about government spending and taxing, arguing politicians buy citizens' votes by pork barrel spending. He cites tax cuts, urban renewal projects, space funding, social security benefits, and congressional pay raises in election years as issues sometimes used to influence voters to vote for a particular politician. He believes government spending "props up the corpse" of failed endeavors and towns. He praises the San Francisco Bay Area for its local funding of the construction of BART. He advocates a limit on social security spending during election years.
