Shriver describes the Peace Corps organization. He believes the organization is efficient, with a high field-worker-to-administrative-employee ratio. He further believes the flexible mission objectives and processes of each field worker means the Peace Corps is effective and not top-down micromanaged. While he is proud of the organization, he says there are not enough business people volunteers to be accountants, et cetera, to help the organization. Shriver calls for both the young and those older, singling out those in their 60s, to volunteer for the Corps. He says demand for the Peace Corps is higher than the available supply in a world that is otherwise antagonistic to American intervention.
Topics covered in the question-and-answer session are the work of the Corps in Latin America, resistance from countries, teaching English in the Philippines, the value of the Peace Corps, Peace Corps as a replacement for the aid program, military coups, language training, Peace Corps vs. Christian missionaries, reception of volunteers in the countries, a domestic Peace Corps, duration of service, and recruitment.
