Speaker Barkley, Alben William (1877-1956)
Date CreatedOctober 11, 1948
Description

Barkley states that there is an inseparable connection between politics and economics. He talks about how the American economy has benefited from the Trade Agreements Act. He talks about how an overwhelming majority of Republicans voted against the Trade Agreements Program and that great damage would have resulted to both the American and world economy had they succeeded in voting down the program. Barkley also talks about how under the leadership of United States, the Charter of United Nations, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Monetary Fund was established to tackle the chaotic global economic scenario after World War II. Barkley states that a normal, fair, equitable revival of world trade should be initiated by United States , so as to generate employment for millions around the world and thus stimulate the sales of goods produced in US.
