Description

A splendid session that begins with a particular bill being considered by the New Jersey state legislature-the New Jersey Post-Viability Abortion Act-but that goes on to examine with uncommon clarity a whole range of questions relating to fetal viability and maternal health. WFB: "Suppose I call in a psychiatrist and the psychiatrist says, 'I've known Mrs. Shaughnessy for years, and I detected two months ago a kind of frenzied fear that if she had another child it would simply ruin her life.... I therefore counseled removal of the child.' How do you handle that?" RPG: "Well, if the child is viable, the child can be removed without killing the child. That's the very definition of viability. The case should be treated no differently than you would treat a case of a woman who has a baby-let's say a month-old baby-who is experiencing severe postpartum trauma; the existence of the baby is bothering her and indeed causing psychological harm.... The answer is not to kill the baby. The answer is to attend to the needs of the woman."
