Description

Accusations fly, along with contradictory statistics, but beneath the noise we hear the great themes of the debate that Mr. Brimelow called for in the preceding debate. LB: "I think it is scandalous for us to sit here and to ascribe the persistent and terrible condition of the African-American poor in this country to immigrants, when in fact it is the responsibility of the long-term residents of this nation." ... ASH: "It is quite laughable for anybody who's been to California to listen to Mr. Sharry talk about all these invigorating immigrants.... Really, anybody who talks to the underclass that you mentioned in California knows that they feel very resentful, and if we want to avoid the kind of explosion of racism that we should avoid, we need to take care of the problem now." ... EK: "We are a country--and I agree with Peter on this--that is founded in the Judaeo-Christian ethic, in Western European mores, and I deplore those who want to shift us away from that, and it doesn't make any difference whether we come from Asia or Africa or Latin America, there is an American ethos, and the immigrants want to be a part of it."
