Description

Today's show is quite different from most of Mr. Adler's Firing Line appearances, which bring basic philosophical concepts to bear on everyday life. Here the philosophy is political philosophy, and the bracing discussion centers more on Marx than on Aristotle, and on how the Soviet Union got to be the way it is and what we can hope for in the future. MA: "A capitalist economy, free-enterprise economy, with pluralistic agencies of enterprise, with workers and owners being in the same class for the most part, would achieve a socialist democracy." WFB: "I regret very much the use of the word socialist, because it invokes its own history, and its own history is one of a dogmatic, anti-capitalist position... Moreover, distributive justice has never been understood to be equal." MA: "Not equal now. Remember, the point is: All haves, but some have more, some less. Never egalitarian; that's wrong."
