Rensch compares California's power situation to that of the eastern United States, which is suffering under a natural gas shortage amid frigid weather. California is more dependent on natural gas, so a shortage would be more painful. In the United States, there are five sources for addressing an energy crisis: conservation, oil, gas, nuclear and coal. California is fueled chiefly by oil and natural gas, but there are drawbacks to relying on them. Problems with natural gas include supply and transportation. Rensch discusses two projects, sponsored by Pacific Lighting and Pacific Gas & Electric, to bring liquefied natural gas (LNG) to California. Pending legislation would add to the bureaucratic hurdles for LNG. Rensch talks about the economic consequences, and how politics plagues the energy scene.
