Description

In June 1975, San Francisco experienced a 15 percent increase in the crime rate; in 1976 there was a 20 percent increase. When any city experiences a demonstrable increase in crime it is necessary to look back, identify the variables that resulted in the increase, and adopt programs to ameliorate the problems. In 1976 a two-fold, programmatic approach to crime was adopted in San Francisco, addressing management and citizen participation. Training became more efficient, and more officers were placed on patrol. Meetings were held with citizens to find out what services they wanted. In another effort, in cooperation with the FBI, the San Francisco police recently embarked on a crime resistance program. Ultimately, the goal of policing is getting as many officers as possible on the street.
