Description

In taxonomizing the left wing of the Labour Party, one starts with party leader Neil

Kinnock (cf. Firing Line #S588) and keeps going leftward till one reaches the Trotskyist Militant Tendency. Somewhere between those two is Mr. Livingstone. His soft-spokenness only adds to the shock value of some of his assertions; that, plus the fact that he is not some fringe figure: a 1982 BBC poll, as Mr. Buckley relates in his introduction, found him to be "the second most admired man in Great Britain, coming in just after the Pope." Mr. Livingstone: "I think most probably Nicaragua's a more democratic society than the United States of America at this point in time." "I have not the slightest doubt that if you had some sort of an attempted left-wing coup in Britain, America would just step in immediately and slaughter us all."
