Mr. Buckley reveals that on Mr. Schorr's previous visit to Firing Line, as a fellow
guest with the author of a book on language and politics (#S695), he had asked if he might return solo sometime to talk about his fifty years in journalism. The hour is less volatile than one might expect given his career (reprimanded by CBS for saying it had fudged its post-resignation treatment of Richard Nixon; fired by CBS for leaking a congressional report to The Village Voice; fired by CNN for reasons not entirely clear). In fact, conservatives are in danger of finding themselves liking their old nemesis, who gives here a pretty convincing explanation of the story he did for CBS in 1964 about Barry Goldwater's reception by Bavarian right-wingers. The conversation ranges from Goldwater and Spiro Agnew to prior restraint and CIA secrets (with an account of Bill Colby coming to the press at one point and saying, " 'If you go with the story now it will do immense damage.' Well, CBS and the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times and apparently everybody except Jack Anderson sat on that story. We are Americans").
