A serious discussion of a serious problem, and one where physicians and
legislators--not to mention lawyers and commentators--were hampered by lack of knowledge as to the communicability of the disease. One sees the full-blown civil-libertarian at work in Mr. Dershowitz's wrestling with the question of what happens at the local public school if a child is diagnosed with AIDS (Mr. Dershowitz winds up saying that parents of other children could be allowed to keep them out of school to avoid danger of infection, but that the parents of the infected child could not be forced to keep him at home). Is it relevant to ask how a particular AIDS victim acquired the disease? What should be done with someone who knowingly communicated the disease to another? Much to think about here--and although some knowledge has been gained, the problem has scarcely gone away in the intervening years.
