Mr. Galbraith, who had just resigned after four years as ambassador, had stirred up a storm a few months earlier when he said Presidents were better served by ambassadors who were not career diplomats. Mr. Eagleburger was one of those who had criticized him, although he himself had earlier lamented the frequent "lack of guts" among Foreign Service Officers. This show is narrower in its range than many, but an interesting exchange on its own terms.
