Speaker Tunney, John V. (John Varick) (1934-)
Date CreatedOctober 29, 1976
Description

Tunney believes that the most important issue in the election is the economy. Both the jobless and the employed are adversely affected in the economy. The jobless are disillusioned and despairing. The employed are hit by inflation while also paying an average of $400 per year to support the unemployed. Before we had "demand-pull" inflation, and now we face skyrocketing costs. The penalties have hit the employed and recession will recur. Tunney proposes a $15 billion tax cut, but believes that any tax cut should include an employment tax credit to stimulate the hiring of the long-term unemployed. Assuring a healthy economy and more purchasing power for Americans is a good policy. Tunney also talks about disregarding the lessons of the Vietnam War, and Hayakawa's views.
