A spirited conversation with one of the first women elected to the U.S. Senate, a
moderate Republican who was a leader in the fight for an across-the-board budget freeze. NLK: "I think most people in this country today worry far more about the increase in interest rates and the effect of that on our economic upturn now than they do anything else. Regarding defense, if we are not strong economically our defense system isn't going to work anyway." WFB: "Well, that's only half true. The Soviet Union is not strong economically and their defense system, unfortunately, works very well." How forward-looking are our legislators? NLK: "We always worry about the future, but it is the immediacy of the moment on which we vote."
