Speaker Lynn, James T. (1927-)
Date CreatedSeptember 24, 1976
Description

Ten years ago the United States government spent twice as much money on national defense as it does today. At present the U.S. spends 55 percent of the budget on human resources and 26 percent on defense. This shows that the nation cares about its people and does not want to see them live an unfulfilled life. However, the U.S. cannot afford the same rate of growth in human resources over the next ten years. Looking at another aspect of the federal budget, Lynn discusses taxes. Tax cuts are essential because if tax rates are not cut, everyone‘s real taxes--the percentage of income paid in taxes--goes up. While we still have inflation, people get wage increases to catch up with that inflation. This puts them into a higher tax bracket, and the government takes away what they were given. Lynn also talks about oppressive regulation, program inefficiencies, and tax incentives.
