Description

The 10 per cent of Americans who are unemployed are not all at the lower end of

the ladder. Messrs. Navin and Malarkey had both been on successful career tracks and have each now been unemployed--and very actively seeking employment--for one year. They discuss, with the pain of personal experience, the difficulty of getting a job if you don't currently have a job, and the fact that, as Mr. Malarkey puts it, "You [an unemployed person] are a social pariah." Mr. Navin: "The job is where we spend most of our waking hours, and it forms the content of our character. It is what it is that we are. ... It is how we contribute. When you don't have a job, who are you?"
