Item Title Speech by the 1976 Republican Vice Presidential Candidate
Speaker Dole, Robert J. (1923-)
Date CreatedSeptember 14, 1976
Description

The United States cannot be strong abroad unless it is strong at home, and it cannot be strong at home unless its economic house is in order. Voters want someone who will provide security and economic stability for Americans. Dole compares Ford‘s and Carter‘s views on government. He discusses economic systems and explains how socialized economies can lead to economic stagnation. Socialism can be introduced via back door, piecemeal programs that ultimately disassemble the free enterprise system. Carter‘s economic agenda includes greater federal spending and bigger government. Ford‘s economic program will continue to restore prosperity and increase employment. The objective now is not to use the economy to achieve federally-conceived social goals, but rather to let the economy heal and come back to full health. By letting the free enterprise system work, the U.S. will continue its record of achievement.

The sound quality is poor at times due to deformation of the original tape carrier (poor slitting).
