Item Title Northeast Asian Focal Point: Korea
Speaker Sneider, Richard L. (1922-)
Date CreatedJuly 30, 1976
Description

Korea was a country ruled by rural elites with a fundamentally Confucian mind-set and a hierarchical structure. The transformation of South Korea has been rapid. Sneider discusses South Korean self-reliance and its focus on economic rather than military development. It is in the national interest of the United States to retain military forces in South Korea. However, the U.S. has made it clear that it is not pleased with the human rights situation in South Korea.
