Description

The first in what WFB describes as "rather spectacular and, I hope, thoughtful

series of four exchanges between men distinguished in the social sciences ..." The series lives up to its billing, starting with this session featuring the leader of the behaviorist school of psychology and a leader in cognitive theory. Do people develop the attitudes they do because, as Mr. Skinner puts it, "when we behave in selfish ways, we get slapped down"? Or do you also, in Mr. Festinger's phrase, "start getting the internalization in the sense that the person really likes that, values it, and will go on doing it in the absence of sanctioning supervision"? An extremely rich discussion, full of graspable details ranging from monkeys solving puzzles to the differences and similarities between a child's rattle and Beethoven's Ninth.
