These Daily Broadcast Analyses (DBAs) provide brief summaries of the topics covered by the Radio Liberty Russian Service each broadcast day. They serve as an index to the service’s broadcast recordings. Once a topic of interest is located in a DBA, note the date of the broadcast, then listen to the full broadcast coverage in the service’s broadcast recording for that date at the Open Society Archives at http://www.osaarchivum.org/digital-repository/osa:89898864-78b7-4cf9-b4f7-aaf218f85599, or search for the script among the paper records of the Russian service at the Hoover Institution (not all tapes or scripts were preserved by RFE/RL, so researchers should not be surprised to find blind references).
The DBAs were prepared in English by qualified analysts and used internally to track the quality and content of programming. A special unit, the Broadcast Analysis Department, prepared the DBAs on the basis of as-broadcast scripts and tapes. They deal separately with domestic, regional, international, and miscellaneous broadcast content as well as newscasts. The DBAs were distributed to senior management and the appropriate broadcast service. DBAs were usually prepared for every broadcast day, but they have not been preserved in their entirety. Consequently, there are some gaps in the collection.
