Item Title Reflections on Urban America
Contributor Quayle, Dan (1947-)
Date CreatedMay 19, 1992
Description

Quayle believes the lawless social anarchy of the recent riots in Los Angeles is directly related to the breakdown of the family structure, personal responsibility, and social order in much of American society. For the poor, the situation is compounded by a welfare ethos. Quayle talks about the black middle class, the underclass, and the need to preserve family values. He singles out television character Murphy Brown (actress Candice Bergen) as someone "who supposedly epitomizes today's intelligent, highly paid professional woman," yet "mock[s] the importance of fathers by bearing a child alone and calling it just another lifestyle choice." Other topics include moral values, family, hard work, integrity, and personal responsibility.
