Item Title Foreign Intelligence for America
Speaker Colby, William Egan (1920-1996)
Date CreatedMay 07, 1975
Description

Due to negative and false perceptions regarding the Central Intelligence Agency, Colby clarifies its role and practices. The tool of modern intelligence is the computer, not the trench coat. The role of intelligence is not solely to identify imminent threats against the United States, but also to develop foreign policy based on facts and reason. He acknowledges the necessity of oversight, but asks that the supervising committees consider the sensitivity of many intelligence operations. Finally, he requests that the CIA's laws and guidelines be clarified so that its mission is clear.
