Bunzel discusses the negative effects of applying race or gender quotas in any competitive field, such as politics, college admissions, and employment. By establishing a base number of minority members that must be allowed, members of the majority are not treated equally. He argues that instead of using discrimination to fix previous discrimination, the system should be completely blind to all demographic factors, instead focusing on the merit of the individual. By concentrating on individuals instead of worrying about group representation, Bunzel believes that equality will occur naturally.
