Paton describes the drastic increase in health insurance costs from 1947 to 1974. The Kennedy-Mills bill and the administration's bill are obsolete. This is because many companies cover the costs of health insurance for their employees and their dependents, and these benefits exceed the benefits that would be provided by the health care legislation. National health care would decrease our freedom of choice and inhibit the ability to shop around for better quality or prices. There is a lack of research to determine if a national health insurance program would actually improve health in the United States. Paton advocates for better nutrition, fitness and personal hygiene education programs. Everyone should have some insurance, and that there are some improvements that can be made to the existing health insurance system, but these improvements can be handled by the private sector.
