After the fall of France in May 1940, during World War II, the German Gestapo prepared for the invasion of Britain by compiling an arrest list of more than 2,300 names that was printed in pocketbook size. The list includes most major figures in the British political establishment, from Winston Churchill and Neville Chamberlain on down, as well as prominent cultural figures and refugees who had fled the continent ahead of the Nazis, some of whom are explicity identified as Jews. Among those slated for arrest were Lady Astor, Noel Coward, Virginia Woolf, H. G. Wells, Paul Robeson, Sidney Reilly, Heinrich Mann, Alexander Korda, Chaim Weizmann, Eduard Benes, Oskar Kokoschka, Aldous Huxley, and Charles de Gaulle. This is one of the rare surviving copies. It is numbered 354, stamped "Geheim!" (Secret), and bears a handwritten title "Gestapo Arrest List for England." After the war, this list became known as the "Black Book" and is commonly known as that today although its title translates to "Special Search List Great Britain" in English.
