Speaker Baker, Marilyn
Date CreatedJuly 19, 1974
Description

Baker criticizes the press for its role in the kidnapping of Patricia Hearst by the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA). Members of the media were more deferential to the demands and requests of the SLA than they were to any other person or group, including government officials. The SLA was able to completely control its media attention so that the group's messages were often printed and broadcast with no analysis. Baker attributes this behavior to "press conference journalism" - the reliance of the media on official sources for information. The public can change the media by demanding better behavior from journalists.
