Speaker Lane, Melvin B.
Date CreatedFebruary 01, 1974
Description

Lane explains how the commission originated with the approval of California proposition 20, and is modeled on the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission. Lane's commission is working on a plan for the conservation of the California coast, which it will present to the state legislature in 1976. The main goal of the California Coastal Zone Commission is to protect the essential environmental qualities of the coast, while minimizing the effects on private homeowners and developers. The greatest opposition is coming from coastal developers, whose building plans have been revised and put on hold. Lane emphasizes that the use of natural resources must be limited to those activities that do not destroy the resources.
