Speaker
Warner, John W.
(1927-)
Date CreatedJanuary 25, 1974
Description
Warner discusses the technological advancements and increasing threat posed by the Soviet Union's navy. Two major events prompted the Soviets to develop a strong navy: (1) the 1958 Lebanese crisis, and (2) the 1962 Cuban missile crisis. Warner compares the recruitment processes, personnel, and equipment of the Soviet and United States navies. He suggests that the U.S. did not make adequate improvements on equipment or technology immediately after World War II. The U.S. is dependent on resources carried by sea, so it must support and advance its navy to compete with the rising Soviet Union.
