After a short introduction by Lawrence Jordon about the Club‘s literature award process, the winning authors accepted their awards and discussed their award-winning books. Edward Rice, the gold medal winner for non-fiction, discussed his book, "Mao‘s Way," and his experiences in China that led him to write it.
Silver medal winner Travis Bogard won for his unclassified work "Contour in Time," a study of Eugene O‘Neill and his influence on California history. Yoshiko Uchida was the silver medal winner in the juvenile category for "Samurai of Gold Hill," which highlights the ethnic subculture of a Japanese immigrant family to California in 1869. The silver medal winner in the Californiana category was Augusta Fink for "Monterey: The Presence of Past." The book is a history of the development of Monterey, California. Hugh Kenner was silver medal winner of the unclassified "The Pound Era," a study of the literature of Ezra Pound, T.S. Elliot and James Joyce. The final silver medal was for Ferol Egan‘s unclassified work, "Sand in a Whirlwind," a recounting of the Indian-American relationship seen through the Paiute War of 1860.
