Item Title Restoring the Constitutional Balance
Speaker Cranston, Alan (1914-2000)
Date CreatedJune 15, 1973
Description

Senator Cranston severely criticizes the unilateral power of the presidency, which developed since the New Deal era and culminated with President Nixon. He believes that Congress must "reclaim equal partnership" to restore the constitutional balance of power. To him, the Watergate investigation is a benchmark of those close to the president consistently practicing "deceit, duplicity, lawlessness, and the dirty tricks of a totalitarian state."
