Speaker Reischauer, Edwin O. (Edwin Oldfather) (1910-1990)
Date CreatedMay 04, 1973
Description

Japan has seen an unprecedented growth rate of 11 percent per annum for twenty years, creating "all sorts of international problems." Due to Japan‘s physical isolation, it depends greatly on foreign markets for imports, which have increased at 16 percent per annum over the same period. Reischauer comments on the shifting relations between the United States and Japan as Japan's economy changes, and the challenges the U.S. faces to overcome misconceptions about Japan‘s growth.
