Item Title Real Estate in the Bay Area
Speaker Foster, T. Jack
Date CreatedMarch 02, 2005
Description

Foster describes the cost of real estate in the Bay Area. He includes an

analysis of how it relates to past years. He argues that trying to stop

growth is akin to trying to stop a Tsunami. In the process, Foster

describes the no-growth movement. He says the no-growth movement caused

the housing crisis since, previously, the idea was to build more as more

people move to California. He further links the movement with Proposition

13, saying people in large, luxury homes are preventing the building of

other large, luxury homes. Moving on, he is worried about the effect of

high housing prices has on the young, middle, and working classes. His

solution to the problem of high prices is to build many more homes and

bring supply and demand back into balance. He advocates repealing

Proposition 13, but limiting the subsequent tax increase to fifty cents on the dollar.
