Speaker
Shermer, Michael
Date CreatedFebruary 16, 2005
Description
Shermer discusses how man thinks about strange phenomena. He notes that both man's IQ is going up every year and that while man is good at snap judgments in a social setting, he says man is bad at statistics in the very short term. He says that when science cannot readily explain something, people jump to conclusions and fill in holes with self-created explanations. Shermer says that misunderstandings, pseudoscience, and belief in the supernatural will always be a part of life. Topics include aliens, creationism/evolution, visual illusions, alternative medicine, and conspiracy theories.
