Item Title Appalachia: World's Biggest Boondoggle
Speaker Dudley, Lysander
Date CreatedApril 23, 1971
Description

Residents of Appalachia were traditionally known for their reluctance to change and "clannish" attitudes. With the collapse of the the coal industry in the 1940s, the Appalachian residents of West Virginia became a "pocket of isolation." Now progressive government programs are bringing new industries like tourism to the region. The creation of the Appalachian Regional Commission by Congress should serve as a catalyst to stimulate growth and vitality in the region.
