Naked in Baghdad
2003c87_a_0001868_r01.MP3
Item Title Naked in Baghdad
Speaker Garrels, Anne (1951-)
Date CreatedOctober 22, 2003
Description

Garrels speaks on reporting on the U.S. invasion of Iraq, both on the logistics of reporting as well as what she saw while in Iraq. Problems she found were knowing where to live/work from, smuggling necessary equipment in and out of the country, and having some small items, like toenail clippers, that most Americans take for granted. In regards to the title of her book, Naked in Baghdad, she says reporting naked in the dark was a safety measure; that if any Iraqi authority interrupted her, she could claim she was sleeping, buying her enough time to shut down her equipment while she was dressing.

About the war, she notes the bombing was incredibly accurate, more accurate than the U.S. bombings in 1991 and 1998. Before the war, the Iraqis she talked to were more scared of the aftermath power vacuum than the actual invasion. She says events since have proved them right. Likewise in the aftermath, she says Iraqis saw American troops in Baghdad as offensive/hurting their national pride. She tells a tale of U.S. troops trying to remove a negative mosaic of George H.W. Bush, that it was like the Shroud of Turin (her analogy) in that the image could not be removed from the ground it was placed on. She believes the rebuilding of Iraq will take a long time.

During the question and answer session, she does not agree the British press was more accurate in their work. She says that journalism in the run up was not journalism's finest moment across the board; saying the BBC often pulled stories fearing retaliation from the Iraqi government. She believed while in Iraq she should not have pulled any punches. One question deals with women's rights in Iraq. She wishes the Pentagon had better prepared U.S. military for the cultural differences they would have with Iraqis, using the example of the foot in Iraqi culture.
