Speaker Underwood, George V. (George Vernon) (1913-1984)
Date CreatedAugust 14, 1970
Description

Underwood discusses his support of the Safeguard Antiballistic Missile Project. He believes this defensive weapons system must be deployed or else the Soviet Union could attain a position of superiority in land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and in submarine-based ballistic missiles (SBBMs) by 1975. Components of the Safeguard system discussed by Underwood are the Perimeter Acquisition Radar (PAR), Missile Site Radar (MSR), and defensive missiles like the Sprint and Spartan. He states that this system will also help the U.S. defend against China's future thermonuclear capabilities.
