Item Title An Australian M.P. Looks at Vietnam
Speaker Cairns, Jim (1914-)
Date CreatedAugust 07, 1970
Description

Cairns comments on Australia's position on the Vietnam War, stating, "the way America goes--we will go." He discusses the history of the occupation of Vietnam, beginning not with the Americans in 1962, but rather with the French in 1847. He expresses frustration over the conflict and America's justification for engaging. He addresses what he views as the U.S. justification that the "national, economic and social problem[s] arising in Vietnam were the result of an invasion from the North." He contradicts the position of the U.S., claiming the conflict is not "with the Viet Cong, or Russia or China-- it is with herself."
