Speaker McNealy, Scott
Date CreatedApril 17, 1998
Description

Scott McNealy speaks about the way humans interact with computers. He argues that the system is fundamentally flawed, that PCs are too complex for the average person, that the all-in-one model is not a good interface. He instead argues for "fat servers and thin clients" as opposed to "fat clients and thin servers", the contemporary model, which is favored by Microsoft. He argues one does not need to know how to work a telephone switch to make a phone call, and that analogy can be used when thinking about computers and computing. He believes this disconnect has hobbled the advancement of technology. In the process, he describes the implications of Sun's Java programming language.
