Speaker Gilmour, Ian (1926-2007)
Date CreatedJune 19, 1981
Description

Gilmour talks about the last three decades of peace and prosperity in Europe. He discusses the positive effects of Great Britain's membership in the European Community (EC), and the benefits of membership for other countries. Gilmour is concerned about Soviet military capabilities, and believes that the EC's defenses must be strengthened in case of war. Gilmour also notes the negative consequences that a war with the Soviets could bring to Europe and explains why Europeans have a different view than Americans on the possibility of war. Finally, to counter Soviet threats he calls for more military and economic aid for small Third World countries.
