Speaker Weinberger, Caspar W.
Date CreatedApril 28, 1981
Description

Weinberger explains his view of United States defense policy and his concerns about the growth of Soviet military capabilities. Weinberger insists that the U.S. should continually strengthen its military power to defend its resources from international threats. While he supports a cut in the military budget, he also calls for improvements in military equipment in use overseas. Weinberger discusses U.S. relations with Japan, China, and Korea, emphasizing the importance of the U.S.-Japan military alliance. Finally, Weinberger asserts that the U.S. nuclear arsenal will not need to be used if U.S. defenses always remain strong.
