Speaker Mankiewicz, Frank (1924-2014)
Date CreatedApril 14, 1978
Description

Mankiewicz discusses how Americans make up their minds, and what‘s on the national agenda, in the television age. He explores how the trivial, disasters, video footage, and revenue from local programming drive TV news. The 1976 presidential campaign was probably the first pure TV political campaign in United States history; the candidates could not talk about complex issues in their short TV news time. Because of this, the candidates did not debate the issues. The economy underlying TV is based on people modeling themselves on TV‘s fantasy world.
