Item Title Our National Energy Policy
Speaker Weicker, Lowell (1931-)
Date CreatedApril 07, 1978
Description

The National Energy Policy has not been passed, but it will pass, and then we can be discouraged, says Weicker. He discusses what was not included in the policy, like a mass transit plan and mandatory conservation. The Crude Oil Equalization Tax (COET) was a gimmick and would have been highly regressive had it passed. Weicker views the rationale for President Carter‘s natural gas deregulation proposal as targeting the electoral college. He concludes that the United States needs strong moral leadership to develop a long-term energy plan.
