Item Title Collective Bargaining, Strikes and Public Employees
Speaker Haughton, Ronald Waring (1916)
Date CreatedSeptember 19, 1969
Description

Haughton comments on the effects strikes have on consumers and taxpayers. He discusses the debate about whether public employees should lawfully be allowed to strike. With the rapid increase in public employment, unions have become increasingly powerful; if it were not for this, union membership would probably be decreasing. With this new strength comes power, and despite the fact that strikes are unlawful, Haughton explains that unions have been able to establish a de facto right to strike. He advocates binding arbitration.

The sound quality throughout is poor due to poor slitting of the original tape.
