Speaker
Smothers, Tom
(1937-)
Date CreatedAugust 22, 1969
Description
After previewing difficulties caused by the cancellation of the Smothers Brothers television show, the speaker discusses freedom of speech. Smothers asserts that the only right of censorship is the right of people not to listen. The new generation is accustomed to instantaneous on television. He argues television causes young people to expect instant solutions; people today do not take the time to listen, or the TV networks will not allow us to listen because they are worried about an objectionable letter. The He says the Smothers Brothers comedy was intended to be humorous and thought-provoking, "when should that become an issue?"
