Speaker Anderson, Charles A. (1917-)
Date CreatedJune 06, 1969
Description

Anderson, the president and CEO, speaks about the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) in light of radical protest groups, singling out the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and the April Third Movement, impact on Stanford University, SRI, and national security. He argues the SRI was setup by the trustees of Stanford to keep the university away from controversial, confidential research that goes beyond the university’s core purpose of education. However, he says the protestors are hurting the SRI, such as how the trustees have decided to formally cut all ties from the already-independent research group based off-campus in Menlo Park. He details the sequence of events of SDS’ protests against SRI’s research, including occupying an unrelated Stanford academic laboratory.
