Item Title A Faculty Approach to Crisis at San Francisco State
Speaker McClatchy, Leo G.
Date CreatedFebruary 14, 1969
Description

To counterbalance the address three weeks prior by S. I. Hayakawa, president of San Francisco State, McClatchy presents his perspective as a faculty member. He believes the greatest problem facing the college is the demands of minority groups, specifically the Black Students Union (BSU) and the Third World Liberation Front (TWLF). He describes the constraints imposed by a massive bureaucracy, in which resources to support programs, such as black studies, are difficult or impossible to obtain. McClatchy also illustrates how the polarization between the trustees, the BSU, and the TWLF, prevents any end to the unrest. Finally, he criticizes the imposition of a 12-unit teaching load.
